Mirah Ammal has been dancing professionally for nearly 25 years, and continues to perform regularly as a soloist and as an artistic director. Her work has included being a regular featured dancer at restaurants in 3 different metro areas; conducting dancer auditions and talent scouting; producing full-feature shows and workshop events, as well as community showcases (haflas); arranging cultural presentations; directing dance troupes; and performing for scores of private events. Mirah brings a wealth of experience cultivating her own artistic work and vision, as well as navigating the pragmatic side of the dance: working with clients, navigating performance scenarios ranging from community events to private weddings and events, restaurants (including set up and scheduling with owners), and more. She understands the challenges that come with navigating the professional dance world, and complexities and decisions dancers may face when trying to decide if or how to build their dance businesses. Her goal with this course is to help give other dancers a boost as they navigate their own unique dance journeys.
The course is delivered using a combination of live, in-person group sessions (weekly), resources and assignments housed in a private online platform, and one private coaching session.
A week before the first class, you will receive a syllabus, information about how to access the online platform, a privacy policy to sign, and information about your first assignment.
After the third live session we will begin scheduling your individual coaching session (which can take place in October or November.)
Live sessions are scheduled weekly on Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
The optional performance will be scheduled a few weeks after the end of the course to allow students additional time to work on their solo piece.
A key component of the course is the interaction with the instructor and with other participants in the cohort, including the opportunity to ask questions in real time and the chance to work on skills or components of your piece with others for inspiration and feedback. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you plan to attend the live sessions.
That said, we know that life gets in the way. Urgent matters come up, you may need to travel for work or vacation, you may have a conflict. If you are aware in advance that you have a conflict for a particular night (or if you have a sudden need to be absent) please contact the instructor.
Please also note, the instructor reserves to right to deny a performance slot in the optional show if a student has not attended a sufficient number of classes or completed activities.
More information will be coming on this, and we will discuss it as a group, but there will be an in-person performance opportunity a few weeks after the end of the course. Those interested in performing should plan to create one piece for that performance, and the piece should generally be 6 minutes or less.
Mirah is available for additional private coaching sessions. Course participants are eligible for a discount on private coaching sessions scheduled between September 23 and the performance opportunity.
